What do you really need to start rewilding a city at full speed? Innovation expert Johannes Riegler discusses this million-dollar question with Linde Vertriest (City of Ghent) and Annelies Sevenant (Ghent Environmental Front) in the podcast series Cities Reimagined.
What if rewilding wasn’t just about greening cities, but about breaking up concrete, shifting mindsets, and letting neighbours plant the future together? That’s exactly what’s happening in Ghent.
Linde and Annelies are joining forces in the Rewild the City project. This project is tackling soil sealing, co-creating urban nature with residents, and testing how cities can shift from pilot projects to lasting systemic change.
A bigger difference
‘Be as ambitious as possible’, says Annelies. ‘This is a great chance to combine different issues, such as climate change and social matters, and make a bigger difference. But do it step by step, with small inspiring examples.’ Linde confirms: ‘Start with what’s in place and always try to keep it simple. That’s the best way to keep people on board.’
